The Abacus
In “Explore the Secrets of Mental Math,” Levels 1 and 2, children are taught to use the abacus to perform each addition and subtraction step. The abacus consists of four columns of nine beads; each column of beads represents the digits between the ones and thousands places. Each of the beads corresponds to the digits in a number. The children are taught to move the beads up and down in the columns to represent each of the addition and subtraction steps in the problem.
